Kamelia “Mia” Poppe, Esq. is the founding partner of The Law Firm of Poppe & Associates, PLLC. She is an experienced practitioner of family law, with niche competencies in high net worth divorce, father’s rights, same sex divorces, the Hague Convention and international child custody, abduction and wrongful retention, and the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA).

Mia has built a firm culture that is client-centric, treating every client the way she would want her relatives treated, and with an unyielding emphasis on alacrity and strategic execution. The Firm’s moniker is “Relentless Advocacy”, and the entire team prides themselves in strong advocacy for their clients.

The Start of a Journey

Mia Poppe grew up in the heart of the South in Charleston. The granddaughter, of a sharecropper, from a young age Mia learned how to “make lemonade” when you get lemons, and also how to “dance in the rain”. People that knew her from her early years fondly call her a Steel Magnolia, a comparison that Mia accepts and embodies.

After graduating from College of Charleston she began her financial and banking career working for Citigroup in the San Francisco Bay area . For the next 22 years she worked as a Senior Business Leader at Citigroup, G.E. Capital, and Bank of America.

Mia’s tenure at these organizations developed her strong leadership skills, as well as gave her the experience necessary to adeptly navigate the most complex financial information and documents. Her financial acumen is key in resolving matrimonial matters, especially high net worth divorces, as economic issues dominate most divorces. Although Mia has strong financial acumen, the team works with forensic accountants on high net worth divorces. The forensic professionals the team works with are skilled at asset tracing, lifestyle analysis, and identifying undisclosed assets.

Mother, Supporter of Women’s Equality and Men’s Equality in Parenting

Mia resides in Manhattan Monday through Friday, and is a proud mother of five (5) children, and three (3) step children. Needless to say, Mia is irrepressible when it comes to women’s rights and female empowerment. Mia has often said that the biggest thing she does for her women clients is to validate their internal power that has been repressed or stolen by a marriage that is no longer healthy for any involved. At the same time, Mia is equally passionate about Father’s rights to parent their children, and believes fathers are much more than just check writers. Mia believes that children benefit from both parents and therefore she declines cases where a potential client wishes to alienate or otherwise destroy the other parent.

Life Outside of the Courtroom

When not in Manhattan during the week, Mia spends her weekends in Westchester County. Mia recently restored a 110 year old Victorian home in Westchester County. Mia regards this home as her dream home because she created all the designs along with a team of professionals. She resides in her dream home on the weekends with her twin daughters, Hannah and Noa, and her two (2) four legged Cockapoo girls, Coco and Moca. Mia spends most of her weekend at the neighborhood Racquet Club either watching her twins in the swimming pool, or watching them play tennis. When not at the club, Mia can be found either jogging, or in a pilates or yoga studio. The haven of Westchester County is the perfect oasis to meditate on the numerous complex cases her firm manages. The active practice of yoga, and pilates affords Mia just the right amount of escape before she heads back to Manhattan to continue fighting for her clients.

In addition to her thriving Manhattan practice, Mia also accepts clients in Westchester County as she equally considers both Manhattan and Westchester her home.

Pursuing a Second Dream Career

Mia was fortunate to have a stellar financial background and she understood that the lifestyle she enjoyed as a banker was a far cry from her upbringing. Nonetheless, Mia desired to pursue her childhood dream of becoming an attorney. After completing law school with honors as a “mature student”, Mia, a single mother of three sons headed to Manhattan to make a big difference in the matrimonial law sphere.

Mia knew the New York City market had no shortage of lawyers. Nonetheless, believing that she offered a more desirable matrimonial lawyer option for New Yorkers, Mia focused on building a strong matrimonial boutique firm in Midtown.

Mia insists that (1) a NYC divorce need not cost a million dollars, (2) divorce law is divorce law and all judges respect ethical, prepared, and knowledgeable lawyers…equally, and (3) client affluence should not equal lawyer entitlement to that client’s affluence.

Mia has 5 children aged 29 years old to 4 year old twins, AND 3 additional stepchildren. She prides herself in a practice that does not leverage children for pecuniary gain, nor does she set strategy that entails making children the collateral damage of a parent’s “friendly fire”. Mia frequently says, “I’m a mother, I won’t pursue a strategy that will foreseeably cause harm to young children or young adult children.” In that regard, Mia says it’s a broad marketplace and clients can retain another lawyer if they desire such strategies.

A Commitment to Relentless Advocacy and Community Involvement

Mia is admitted to practice law in the following jurisdictions: New York State, U.S. Federal District Court Southern District of New York, U.S Federal District Court Eastern District of New York, U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Federal District Court of New Jersey.

Mia is an active member of a number of legal organizations, including the matrimonial pro bono project jointly sponsored by the Brooklyn Bar Association and Brooklyn Law School, the New York State Bar Association, the New York County Lawyers Association, and several religious organizations.

Mia is a member of the steering committee for Lincoln Center Kids, and helps bring the arts to children ages 3 and up, and to underserved communities.  Mia, like many, believes that the arts are for all to enjoy and access to the arts should be afforded to all children living in the artistically rich, New York city.  Mia regularly attends dinners, concerts, and theatrical productions at Lincoln Center.  Mia is presently expanding her philanthropic endeavors to combat homelessless and disparity in education.  Mia also donates to her alma mater, North Carolina University School of Law.

Mia is the managing partner of the Firm, and along with Robyn Mann, Partner and Director of the Robyn Mann Mediation Group, daily operations are managed.  Mia and Robyn share a commitment to clients, and a commitment to doing the right thing for their clients.
